In 1784 a German village doctor from a copper-mining area of Saxony came forward with some claims against the current state of medicine, saying that often the practice did the patient more harm than good, such as the custom of bloodletting.  He chose to give up his practice and instead of be a writer and translator, investigating the causes of medicine's errors.  His research led him to an astonishing realization,
