Another Lesson From the Clinic Cats

Recently we got a new clinic kitten at the Holden clinic which many patients have already played with and petted! But one thing that changed was the water for the cats. Now that there was a new kitten I felt we should have one of the automatic drinking fountains for the cats. Finding one that is absolutely silent was a critical piece and it provides fresh, filtered water all the time!

What I did not anticipate was the amount of urine the cats would put out simply because they were drinking so much more water …. automatically as it were! It was so much that I had to change from the crystal litter back to clay litter because after half a day, the cats would no longer go into the litter box because there was so much unabsorbed urine in the bottom of the box.

I know this isn’t a pretty conversation, but the end result is impressive. It got me thinking about how much water I drink while at the clinic. In the Holden clinic our water ionizer which creates the best drinking water I’ve ever had for 30 years, was in the treatment room bathroom which made drinking that water more of a planned visit, than on the spur of the moment. So I moved the machine down to the clinic kitchen. This made it exactly like the cats’ drinking fountain …. immediate gratification on demand. I noticed that I was drinking a LOT more water throughout the day. After the first week of running to pee frequently, it reduced and I realized that I was actually absorbing the water more effectively.

So I started giving the cats the water from the ionizer in their little drinking fountain and lo and behold, less urination. Their fur started getting much more silky, their eyes look really amazing and all of this reminded me of why I bought these particular ionizers in the first place 30 years ago. Better health and more cellular water absorption.

Sometimes you just need to pay more attention to simple things like water intake. Just another lesson I’ve learned from cats!
